Atty. Stuart A. McMillan

Stuart A. McMillan is a partner in the Charleston office of Bowles Rice LLP and leader of the firm’s Mass & Toxic Torts Practice Group. His primary practice areas include civil trial and appellate litigation and he tries cases in both federal and state courts throughout West Virginia. He has tried numerous cases to verdict, including libel, defamation, trespass and bodily injury lawsuits. Mr. McMillan is experienced in and frequently lectures on issues pertaining to civil litigation. He is admitted to practice before the U.S. District Court for the Southern District and Northern District of West Virginia and before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit. Mr. McMillan is a member of the firm’s Executive Committee and serves as group leader for the Bowles Rice Tort Insurance Group.

Mr. McMillan earned his bachelor of arts degree in 1988 from Vanderbilt University and his law degree in 1993 from West Virginia University, where he was a member of the Traveling Lugar Trial Team and Moot Court.

Active in many community and professional organizations, Mr. McMillan is a member of the Kanawha County Bar Association, the West Virginia State Bar, the West Virginia Bar Association, Tort and Insurance Committee of the American Bar Association and Judicial Improvement Committee. He is a member of the Executive Committee of the Board of Governors of the West Virginia State Bar and currently chairs the judicial improvement committee of the West Virginia State Bar. Mr. McMillan is a board member of the Kanawha United Presbyterian Church and chairman for the YMCA of the Kanawha Valley. He is also listed among The Best Lawyers in America in the areas of Commercial Litigation, Insurance Law, Litigation - First Amendment and Media Law by publishers Woodward & White. Mr. McMillan has an AV (preeminent) peer-review rating from Martindale-Hubbell. He has also been named to Super Lawyers Magazine for Virginia and West Virginia for Business Litigation.
