There are some rules about hearings having to take place within a certain number of days of the motion/petition being filed (for example: a domestic violence hearing must occur within 14 days of the filing of the petition). However, for most court dates there is no law/rule/ordinance that limits the number of times a court dates can be passed. Most Judges in Jefferson County will only pass a court date for good cause and after a court date has been passed more than once most of the Judges try to get the issues resolved. If a court date has been passed several times, in my experience, it is because the parties agree or the Judge is waiting for someone to complete something that will be important to the Judge's decision.

74. There is actually no rule on number of times. You or your attorney may object if you do not want to reschedule. There are a number of reasons for rescheduling which may include: emergencies, outstanding discovery, conflict of either attorney or litigant, or pending resolution. Attorneys also have a duty to work together if there is a conflict so long as the client is not adversely affected. You should have a frank discussion with your attorney if you believe that the continuances are excessive. If agreed, most courts will reschedule. If not agreed, the judge will rule on whether a continuance is necessary and either grant or deny the request.
