Owner wants me to pay for burn marks on his car

Yes. You are liable for damages. You set the dangerous uncontrollable force into motion and your are liable for the consequences.
The owner of the car did nothing wrong. By parking the car in a public street, they did not bargain for having the vehicle become a landing zone for fireworks.
My advice: Pay their damages or risk a judge awarding that plus court costs and more.

I agree with the first answer. If you did the crime, pay for it. Make sure you get a release once you pay for the damages.
Good luck.
Who else? The fact that the vehicle was parked on a public street does not absolve you from liability for your negligent conduct.
Yes you are responsible.
