Wow, terrible accident.
We just closed a Minot motorcycle case for a fellow who was on his way to the Base, so the nature of ND insurance policies for motorcycles is still fresh in my mind. In his case, we were able to find almost a quarter-million dollars, but that was only because the defendant had much better insurance that we often
see.
Some of the problems with ND bike insurance is that it is incredibly misleading. "Comprehensive coverage" doesn't include collisions. Amazing. "Underinsured motorist coverage" doesn't apply to bikes the way it does for autos. Amazing.
But, with injuries as severe as yours, it is worth finding a lawyer that will dig deeper into what was really going on with the Defendant. There is simply way too much oil and industry work going on around Minot and all of ND not to always make sure that there isn't a corporate insurance policy to be found for folks hurt as badly as you were.
So, for the "how much?" question you asked.... I'd operate under the assumption that it needs to be pretty much all of the insurance you can find. The reasons you want a lawyer are that (a) finding it is hard and injured people are deceived into thinking there is less insurance than there really is very, very often, and (2) you'll want an attorney to work to keep the medical providers and health insurers from taking all the money that you do find.
