What legal recourse to I have for an item stolen from my apartment while the property management had workers inside of it?

I live in a rental apartment complex. The property management company have been doing upgrades to the apartments and allowing contracted workers to enter the units unattended to do the work. On the final day of work at my unit I came home to find a recently purchased pair of $50 leather sandals gone. I brought it to the onsite manager's attention, providing him with receipt of the recent purchase and asked to be reimbursed for the replacement cost. The answer he received from the management company he works for is that they would not cover the cost and it was not their responsibility. I am amazed by this response. What legal recourse do I have here? Thank you

I don't know why you are amazed, the management is on apparently solid ground. If something was stolen from your home, you should report it to the police and make an insurance claim if you wish, but the landlord is not responsible to protect you from theft or a crime in general. If the workers being there unsupervised was a concern to you, you should have arranged to either be there to watch or had someone you trusted there - it is a major reason why the landlord has to give you advanced notice that they are coming in.
