I'm currently in the process of filing for custody of my daughter and I need to know if I can pay a lawyer to help me fill out the paperwork without having to retain them.

Of course, there is. Feel free to use the Avvo "Find a Lawyer" function or the Idaho State Bar Lawyer Referral Service to find an attorney qualified to do so. (This public Q&A is not intended for attorney recruitment00 or client solicitation either.)

A lawyer can help, but the fee agreement should state clearly that the only service the attorney is providing is advice and is not representing you in the case. However, unless you know for sure that your ex is not going to fight you and has agreed to the terms, you might be better served by hiring the attorney and helping you all the way through the process.
