- He attended the LSU Paul M. Hebert Law Center and received his Juris Doctor in 1984
- Rick first practiced law in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and, in 1986, joined a firm in Opelousas, practicing in its bankruptcy department
- In September of 1995, Rick formed "D
- Patrick Keating, APLC" and practiced law as a sole practitioner in Opelousas, with an emphasis on bankruptcy matters
- In October of 2010, he moved his office to Lafayette and formed “The Keating Firm, APLC” to continue his bankruptcy law practice
