What you're looking at
This page lists every active U.S. attorney on AttorneyQnA whose surname begins with J. The roster is 62,395 lawyers long and rebuilt nightly at 03:30 UTC from the underlying lawyers table, so newly verified profiles and recently inactivated accounts are reflected in the next day's listing. The bucket spans 78 pages of 800 names each, displayed in alphabetical order on surname, then on first name as a tie-breaker.
Alphabetical browsing is one of three primary search patterns the directory supports — alongside geographic search (city, state) and practice-area search. People typically arrive here for one of two reasons: they remember the attorney's surname but not the firm or city, or they're comparing several lawyers with the same surname against each other. If you know your attorney's first name and approximate area as well, an exact full-text search beginning with J is usually faster.
The most heavily represented surnames in the J bucket are Johnson, Jones, Jackson, James, and Jacobs — common surnames produce dense clusters of same-named attorneys in different cities, so use the city or state cards below to narrow further when needed.
When alphabetical browsing is the right tool
Alphabetical directories were the original lookup pattern for legal services — the paper bar registers and Martindale-Hubbell volumes that AttorneyQnA's modern directory descends from were all organised by surname first, then by jurisdiction. The pattern survives because it solves a specific search problem better than any other interface: the case where you know who but not where.
The three situations where this page is the right starting point:
- You have a referral, but only a name. A friend, a previous attorney, or a bar association referred you to a lawyer whose name you have written down — but you've lost the contact details. Surname-first browsing surfaces every J-surname attorney across all 50 states in one place.
- You're verifying credentials. A counterparty mentioned a lawyer by name and you want to confirm the lawyer is real, currently licensed, and in a plausible location. The alphabetical listing brings every match into view, and each linked profile shows current bar admissions and verified contact details.
- You're doing competitive or comparative research. Several practitioners with the same surname work in adjacent jurisdictions, and you want to see the cluster — common in family practices, firm successor relationships, or after lateral hires.
If your search instead starts with a place ("I need a lawyer in Chicago") or a problem ("I need a personal-injury attorney"), open the city directory or the practice-area hub first — those filters land you on a focused set of matches faster than the alphabetical view.
How AttorneyQnA verifies the names on this page
Every attorney listed in the directory has been sourced from at least one authoritative public record and passes through five filters before appearing on a directory page. Understanding the filters helps you read each profile correctly — and helps you spot anything that looks off.
- Surname is taken verbatim from a bar registration. We don't normalise the spelling, drop suffixes, or invent middle initials. If the registered surname is "Van Buren" with a space, that's the surname we use; the same lawyer appears under "V" rather than "B".
- Active status is checked against the relevant state bar. Disbarred, suspended, or retired attorneys are flagged or removed within one nightly refresh of the state bar publishing the change.
- Generic placeholder rows are excluded. Names that aren't real attorney names — "Find a Lawyer", "AvvoPro Attorney", "Attorney Unknown" — are stripped out by the cleanup that runs against every scrape source.
- The display name is rebuilt from upstream data on every refresh. If a typo or scrape artefact slipped through (a concatenated city, a stray practice-area label glued onto the surname), the cleaner reapplies its normalisation rules during the nightly directory rebuild.
- Duplicate placeholders are merged. When the same attorney appears in multiple source feeds, the canonical row is preserved and the duplicates are de-listed — so you should see each lawyer once in the alphabetical browse, not multiple near-identical rows.
None of this is a substitute for confirming the lawyer's current standing directly with their state bar before hiring. Every linked profile shows the lawyer's stated bar admissions; cross-check them against the state-bar website for the relevant jurisdiction before signing an engagement letter.
Top cities for attorneys in this bucket
These are the U.S. cities with the largest number of attorneys whose surname falls inside the J bucket. Each card opens the city's verified attorney roster across every practice area — useful when you want to combine surname-first browsing with a geographic filter.
Top practice areas in the J bucket
The cards below show the practice areas with the most attorneys whose surname falls in J. Each link opens the national hub for that practice area — useful when you're verifying a referral and want to confirm the attorney genuinely practices the area their referrer described.
Browse attorneys by surname A–Z
The full alphabetical directory covers all 2,310,655 active attorneys, partitioned across 28 buckets — twenty-six Latin letters plus a numeric bucket and the non-Latin # bucket. Use the cloud below to jump directly to another letter; the number next to each label is the current attorney count in that bucket.
Frequently asked questions about the alphabetical directory
How fresh is this list?
The alphabetical directory is rebuilt nightly at 03:30 UTC from the live lawyers table. New profiles, status changes, and surname corrections published during the day appear in the next morning's listing. The underlying lawyer profiles themselves update in real time — only the alphabetical roster is rebuilt as a single nightly batch (because rebuilding the materialised view on every change would slow every profile-edit save).
Why does the same attorney sometimes show up under two different letters?
It shouldn't, after our 2026-06-20 dedup. When it does, it means two underlying database rows still exist for the same person — usually because the same attorney was scraped from multiple sources (Lawyers.com + Martindale + Best Lawyers) before the dedup pipeline ran. We close out duplicates as we find them. If you spot one, the easiest way to report it is to click both profiles and use the "Report a problem" link in the footer of either page.
Why are some attorneys missing the city or rating on this page?
The alphabetical view is intentionally minimal — surname, rank, and link. Showing every attribute (city, state, practice area, rating) on the alphabetical browse would make the page enormous on letters with tens of thousands of names. Click any name to open the full profile, which carries the complete record: bar admissions, practice areas, languages, office address, ratings, and reviews.
How do you decide what counts as a "surname" for sorting?
We take the registered last_name field exactly as the lawyer's state bar has it on file. Hyphenated surnames sort under their first segment ("Sánchez-García" goes under S, not G). Compound surnames with a space sort under the first segment as well ("Van Buren" under V). Suffixes like Jr., III, or Esq. are ignored for ordering. Surnames with leading lower-case particles ("de", "von", "ten") sort under the capital letter of the particle if it appears that way on the bar register, otherwise under the first uppercase letter of the surname proper.
Are bar status and discipline reflected here?
Yes — disbarred, suspended, and inactive-status attorneys are removed from the alphabetical directory within one nightly refresh of the change appearing on the state bar's public lookup. Public-record disciplinary history is shown on the individual lawyer's profile (not the alphabetical view), and you should always re-verify standing with the state bar directly before hiring.
Can I download the full alphabetical directory?
The directory is intended for browse-and-link use, not bulk download. The complete list of attorney URLs is publicly available through the site's XML sitemap for search-engine crawlers; that file is sharded by surname and can be parsed if you have a legitimate aggregation use case. For research or commercial bulk use, contact us through the footer link — we can scope something based on what you need.
Why is the # bucket so much smaller than the letter buckets?
The # bucket holds surnames that don't start with a Latin A–Z character: accented characters, non-Latin scripts, and certain symbols. Because U.S. bar registrations are overwhelmingly in standard ASCII, only a small fraction of attorneys fall into this bucket. The 0–9 bucket is even smaller and mostly captures law-firm-as-attorney edge cases where the firm name begins with a digit.
What if I'm looking for an attorney whose name has changed?
Use full-text search on the main directory rather than the alphabetical browse — search will find a current profile from either name as long as we have it on file. If the lawyer's old surname is the one you remember, search by it; if the profile lists the new surname, the alphabetical browse will surface it under the new letter rather than the old one.
Attorneys in J bucket — by state
All attorneys →The cards below show how the J bucket distributes across all 50 states. Each link narrows the view to attorneys in that state, where the regular state directory takes over and you can filter further by city or practice area.
