How long can a attorney hold your drivers license for a traffic accident in Alabama.

I was in Alabama in 2002 and was involved in a traffic accident. I have never accually had an Alabama Drivers license, I am from California. A few years ago I went to the DMV in California to get my license, and two months later I recieved a letter from them stating that they couldn't issue my license because Alabama had a hold put on it. After calling Alabama's DMV, i was told that an attorney from an insurrance company had my license on hold for a civil judgement that they had recieved against me. (I never got any letter or anything saying that i would be taken to court.)

I strongly suggest that you contact at least an investigator in Alabama to research the court records. You need to have an answer to what notice was provided. You may or may not be able to attack the judgment. You may just want to hire an attorney to look into the situation. Or you could just send money to the attorney in Alabama.

I would agree with Mr. Hudson that you probably need someone "on the ground" in Alabama to assist you. I would bet that there are a number of "attorney services" there that could research the records for you, based on the information you already have. Once you know more about what took place there, you'll have a better idea of your options, at which point, you may want to retain counsel in Alabama to assist in setting aside or otherwise resolving the judgment issue.
