Your boyfriend needs to contact DMV within 10 days of the arrest to request a hearing or his license will automatically be suspended for four months, effective 30 days from the date of arrest. If he gets convicted in court, the suspension will be six months, not four. After one month of total suspension, he will be eligible for a restricted license, enabling him to drive to and from work.

If he's already paid a lot to his lawyer then it is his lawyer to whom questions should be directed. His lawyer knows more about his case than anyone on this site possibly can.

Your boyfriend has 10 days from the date of the incident to demand a DMV hearing, though his attorney has probably already done this if he was retained within that time. Without knowing the facts of the case, no one is in a better position to advise you than his attorney. He should be asking questions of his attorney, rather than having you post a question in an online forum. His attorney should certainly be able to advise him about what's likely to happen in the future, and the advice will be specific to his case and needs.
