How do I appeal having a camera installed in my car along with the ignition interlock?

I was informed today that as of August 1, 2013 I will be required to sign a new lease for my ignition interlock that will include having a camera installed in my vehicle or I will not be able to drive. I have had my interlock since July 2008 and it is due to be removed January 2013. That is 4.5 months of having the inconvience of a camera in my car. I can't have my fiance drive, I can't take my car to be serviced because they aren't going to want to blow and have their picture taken. I see all sorts of problems with this. I want to look into an appeal to have my interlock removed early if I am not able to keep the camera from being installed in my car. To me, this is an extreme violation of my privacy. I am willing to continue with my sentence without the camera.

If the interlock is a condition of probation, your course of action would be a motion to modify the conditions of probation.

Well, a little more information would be needed to fully answer your question. If a judge required you to install an Ignition Interlock Device with a camera then you can go back in front of that judge and ask him to reconsider. If the ignition interlock company is telling you this then you can just go to a different provider. The law says that you have to have an ignition interlock device it doesn't say who you have to get one from. As a whole, Ignition interlock devices with camera's have been able to save my clients some amount of trouble. With a camera installed you can let people borrow your vehicle without being worried that they are going to get you in trouble by having some amount of alcohol on their breath. It makes it a lot easier to say, "It wasn't me." Because of all the times people have gone to court and said that someone else blew into the machine this type of IID is getting a lot more popular. If the trend continues I get the feeling that before long all Ignition Interlock's will have have cameras in them. As far as an appeal goes to have it removed early I think that would be difficult. The requirement is statutory and even the Judge doesn't have the power to change it. You don't need to have the device installed at all if you can get around by bus or bike. My best advice for now would be to shop around for a different company or express your privacy concerns to your Judge.

Did the Judge require a camera IID or is your IID provider upgrading? If just the latter, you should shop around for a different IID provider that does not yet have the cameras. Here is a link to WSP approved providers. http://www.wsp.wa.gov/traveler/interlock.htm. At your service,
