Why would your lawyer's criminal defense investigator meet with family to try and interrogate them?

Our lawyers defense investigator requested to meet us regarding our loved one's case. During the meeting, the investigator began statements and questions that would in no way help the defendant. He told us the federal prosecutor had him meet with us. It now appears as though we can't even trust our lawyer. Why would our lawyers investigator do this and what actions should we take to resolve this issue? Our lawyers investigator should be gathering information to help us instead of trying to interrogate us like he said the prosecutor instructed him to do.
Not sure I understand your question, really, but if you are asking why the defense investigator is interrogating your family and your witnesses and ripping into them, then by answer is:
Be happy. The defense team ought to be shaking you up, pushing you, and testing your stories. If they don't do it now, you will be in big trouble when the prosecutor does it in court.
Do you want a patsy defending you?

Maybe he was trying to establish an alibi. Maybe he thinks that the defendant is covering for a family member.
Everyone's technique differs. In meeting with a group, and asking the question: "was any one with X on Friday"--- Maybe no one answers. If he asks "hey you, where were YOU on Friday"?? The latter question is better couched to force an answer.
Families lie and cover up much as do other groups and an effective interrogator MUST get to the truth.
His JOB is to GET THE TRUTH to put on the BEST DEFENSE for the incarcerated person.
NOT to hold the hands of the family members.
If it results on freeing the accussed ---- ITS A GOOD THING.
