Can an Asylum based Green Card holder use national passport to travel?

Or does he have to obtain a travel document instead, even if his national passport is valid?

It is not wise to use the passport of the country from which you claimed asylum. It is best to just wait for a greencard ... then use a travel document.

It would not be wise to use a document issued by the government that you claimed was persecuting you or not protecting you.

I agree with the answers above. If you have a green card it is not hard to get a travel document from USCIS. You should appy for it well before your trip.
