How do I obtain sole legal custody of my little cousin?

I am 23 currently in college and in a year I will be graduating and moving to Utah and I need to take sole legal custody of my cousin. Her mother is very unfit and unloving. My cousin is 11 currently but will be 12 when I file. She does not want to continue a life with her mother and would prefer to live with me. Her mother treats her like a unwanted pet and is very violent towards her. The child is very unhappy and depressed. Her mother has done drugs in front of her and is believed to have had sexual relations in front of her. They safety of the child has always been an issue. Her mother does not work and it is apparent that she cares more about herself than the child. She does not have dissent clothing nor shoes. I love her more then words can explain and I want a good life for her.

I suggest you consult with an attorney in your area specializing in Guardianship.

This would be a very difficult proposition. Though not impossible, you would either have to request Letters of Guardianship from the Probate Court or institute parental rights termination proceedings. Courts are extremely reluctant to abridge parental rights. Further, because you are a cousin things may be even more difficult (and expensive).
