I have my h1b visa till 2015. Planning to take a sabbatical for 6-12 months and work for animal non profits in United states (unpaid). Can I do that without leaving the company? Thanks niti

No. While on H-1B, you can only work, whether paid or unpaid, for the H-1B employer.
