Schedule a consultation with a few lawyers and pick the one with the most experience you can afford.

I agree with Mr. Pines. I only add that you need to be careful about hiring "cheap" representation. If someone makes you a low-ball fee quote, it is generally due to one of three reasons: (1) they are new to the practice and trying to build their caseload; (2) they don't expect to do much work in the case; or (3) they know you and are giving you a discount. Since you don't know the lawyer, a reduced fee is likely to be quoted from an inexperienced lawyer or a lawyer that is not going to work hard on the case. There are exceptions to this general rule, but be wary of cheap fee quotes. Make sure you check into the background of the lawyer before you retain an cheap one.

If you planned to jump out of an airplane, would you shop for the cheapest parachute? Would you shop for the cheapest doctor for your child? Then don't hire the cheapest lawyer, either. You get what you pay for, and it's better to have a better lawyer than you need than to need a better lawyer than you have.

Shop around. You can find a lawyer at any price point, but what you need to worry about is the amount of work the lawyer is going to do for you. Ask the lawyer to explain exactly what he or she's going to do, and discuss ways you can do some of the work to lower the fee (track stuff down yourself, etc.) What you don't want to do is hire a lawyer "because the case will just be dismissed" and then it isn't and you didn't pay your lawyer enough to prepare the case for trial.

I strongly believe in the saying "you get what you paid for". With serious charges as these, hiring the "cheapest" lawyer would not help your case any. If it's a "good" lawyer, he/she wouldn't be cheap. If it's a "cheap" lawyer, he/she wouldn't have the type of experience to handle such charges and will end up convincing your boyfriend to just take a guilty plea. I would consult with an experienced criminal trial defense attorney who is well known in your county.
