Can a body shop charge for an estimate after a car accident if you choose to go elsewhere with no paperwork of any sort signed?

We got an estimate for repairs after an accident and have decided to get a second opinion and body shop has charged us for the estimate as well as storage fees. We have not signed any paper work of any kind and our auto insurance is refusing to pay the charges. The new body shop paid the charges when they picked it up. Are we responsible for paying this when there was no mention of any charges and no paperwork at all?

Depending on how long your vehicle was sitting on the repair shop property, they likely are entitled to charge you for "storage". There should not have been a charge for merely giving an estimate. Consult with an attorney in your area.

"The new body shop" might just absorb that cost into the total amount of the repairs - ask them, it is often done if the charges the paid were not too large & the repair job is large enough for them to make a good profit. Best wishes
