My neighbors black walnut tree hangs over my yard and makes a huge mess every fall. Is it legal for me to trim it?

The tree is just over the property line on their property and I would only be trimming it up to the property line and not going on their property to do it. They are not very nice people and we don't speak at all.

You can trim back any part of the tree that encroaches/hangs over into your property. If your neighbor gets upset and wants to sue you, as long as it looks to the court that you reasonably and in good faith tried to stay within your property lines, while there are no guarantees, your neighbor will probably not prevail.

If you don't talk now; wait till you "trim" the tree. Whatever is on your property line you can trim. I suggest you inform them in advance by letter and tell them you are paying and will do a good job in preserving the specimen, by qualified a qualified arborist. ---then go at it.

I agree with the previous answers and perhaps written advance notice of your intent will spark a conversation. You should use a licensed and bonded arborist to avoid liability in case they sue or get hit by a branch. Good Luck
