Can someone break this down to exactly what it means? I just looked up my friend and this is his charge, I don't know what it means. I know he has a prior felony, will he most certainly do jail time or do you think he could get off? Please help.
I do not bring the penal law home with me but, Criminal Possession 2nd is a very serious felony usually defined by having a sell-able quantity of cocaine or heroin, although meta-amphetamine and others sometimes join the list.. A conviction on that charge usually results in a jail term, even in NYC. If he is a prior felon, heavy prison can be expected. However, there are always avenues to try in an attempt to get him off or get him a pleas bargain.
As a predicate felon facing a felony charges, jail is certainly a possibility. His lawyer would be better able to answer questions based on the possession of more facts.

As an A felony the offers will almost exclusively require jail and with the prior felony conviction, especially if for something similar, will virtually guarantee jail if he is convicted.

This one of the most serious charges in the New York State Penal Law. Stated plainly, your friend possessed a large amount of drugs. Because he has a prior felony conviction, he may be a "predicate felon" which would increase the possible sentence. I was a prosecutor in the Office of Special Narcotics for several years, and the likelihood that he will prevail in the case is largely dependent upon the facts. You should instruct your friend to consult a criminal attorney immediately.
