I understand that you want to spend as little as possible, for a lawyer. You must understand that in life, you get what you pay for. And when you balance the fee of a highly qualified attorney verses the ultimate resolution obtained, its hard to put a fee on a result that could impact the rest of your life. I agree with many attorneys, who have already spoken to your question. Many firms like ours , have handled 100's of cases like yours, if not more. Would you expect to pay the same fee for a brand new attorney as you would for someone who has been doing this type of work for over 25 years, like we have. Call around, and look at some web-sites and speak to a couple of attorneys. Pick one you believe will FIGHT for you and your FUTURE ( a conviction here could mean not getting many jobs)......NOT one who will quote you a low fee. I wish you the very best........David Wallin

It depends. I can't quote you prices because almost everyone has different ideas of what they will work for. If your case is settled early on, an attorney might charge in the thousands; if you go to trial it's going to be very much more.

Fees vary quite a bit. Make some calls. The value of the item taken, i.e. $40, does not mean that the attorney fees will be less than if the item stolen was valued at $50. Rather, the amount of time necessary to resolve the case on the best terms for you is usually what is most controlling in the fee. Call some attorneys on who have offices near the courthouse where your case is venued. It can be helpful to retain an attorney who has lots of experience in that courthouse and who has a proven track record for your type of case. Go to the attorney's website and review his or her case results for your courthouse. Good luck.

We cannot give you price quotes on , but if you call a few attorneys, you'll get a better idea of the cost to represent you. Fees vary substantially, so your best bet would be to call a few attorneys and talk to them about your case. Petty theft isn't the crime of the century, but you'll still want to do all that you can to avoid the charge having an impact on your record and future.

You should have an attorney for this offense. Call some attorneys listed . Courts in Los Angeles County have different policies with respect to sentences. The fact that the item is of low value is in your favor. Do not pay any civil demand letters you might receive from The store or it's attorneys.

It depends. Many criminal attorneys charge one fee for pretrial work and another fee for trial if it comes to that. Most cases resolve without a trial, so the trial fee is probably not going to happen. Cases like the one you describe tend to cost between $2,500 and $5,000 - sometimes more and sometimes less. It's worth it though because you may be in a great position to settle it for an infraction (a non-crime) and THAT is worth a bundle! Call around and ask. That' sweat attorneys are for!

The penalty for a petty theft ( first time) is usually minor (fine and/or community service and probation). BUT it is the charge itself which can cause you years of problems. Many employers are hesitant to hire employees with theft convictions. Because it is a crime of moral turpitude, there are immigration consequences. It is also a priorable offense. Additionally, if you are in a licensed profession, the conviction could cause you to lose your license. Therefore, I strongly encourage you to retain an attorney. Fees vary, so I suggest that you call a few and meet with them in person to see who you are comfortable with. Most attorneys offer complimentary consultations.
