What is my responsibility as a joint sponsor of an immigrant?

I am a friend of a family who wants me to help sponsor two of their children get legal residency; their income is not enough to sponsor both. If I did this, do they lose means-tested benefits from the federal and state government and am I obligated to then provide food a medical and other support for the child? (they have no medical insurance)

The form specifically sets forth your obligations. If these individuals accept means-tested benefits once they become permanent residents, the government agency may seek reimbursement from you. You can be sued to provide the level if support to which you agreed to provide.

Read the instructions before you sign. The Affidavit of Support is an enforceable contract. If they receive means tested benefits, the government can seek reimbursement from the joint sponsor - you.
