Can you request that the other party pay your attorney fees in a child custody battle?

If a party brings suit against you in a child custody case and looses can you request that they pay your attorney fee's? And when exactly do you make that request? My attorney said he advised the other party's attorney that he was going to request that but did not bring it up to the judge after his ruling in our trial case. Is it too late to request that from the other party?

Yes, you can definitely ask for attorney fees. Your attorney may have cost you the right to ask for attorney fees if he did not request them in the pleadings and forgot to mention them during the hearing. Talk with your attorney, that is what he is there for.

If you had an attorney who did not request attorney's fees, it could be too late. If you don't think you have received good quality representation, by all means, consult with a new attorney to fully understand your rights. Good luck to you.
