I received a summons for underage drinking in NJ. I was convicted of a municipal ordinance. Will I have to disclose this on graduate school application?

Depends on the question. If the question is have you ever been convicted of a crime then the answer is no.

NO. It is not a criminal offense.

That is a tricky question that has a long answer and a short answer. The short answer is get it expunged from your record, and you can swear on a stack of bibles in open court that the charge never existed and it wouldn't be perjury. The long answer depends on whether the application says "crime", "charged", "arrest", "sentenced", "felony", "misdemeanor", etc.

No. You generally only have to disclose criminal offenses and convictions.

Answer: If the question asks if you have ever been arrested, and you were arrested for the underage drinking, then yes. If the question asks if you were convicted if a crime, then no.

Most likely not. Most school applications only ask about criminal offenses, which a municipal ordinance is not. You can make the answer definitely not by expunging the records of the arrest and conviction. You are eligible to do this two years from the date of the conviction or paying the fine in full (whichever is later). An expungement makes it as if the event never happened and you never have to disclose it anyone.

It is not a criminal offense so it depends on the question. Unless things have changed the schools do not run CCH. There it will show an arrest if it was for a DP. Expunge it in 2 years.
