My son got into trouble at school - one of which is charged with having a firecracker in his backpack. They stated this could be charged as a firearms violation. Is this true? And if they can does it affect his ability to carry his rifle during our family's hunting season?

It would be very difficult to answer this question without more information. However, you should not post any more details of this online, as we never know who is reading what we post (including the police). Your son should talk to a lawyer about this to assess hit situation and to see what can be done. Only a conversation with a lawyer is confidential--not even a conversation with you, his mother, is private. If your son is convicted of various weapons charges, that can affect his ability to go hunting, especially if those convictions are felonies. Have your son talk to a lawyer immediately to protect his rights and see what can be done for him. Good luck.

Your question is confusing. One sentence says "is charged" and the other says, "... could be charged". The short answer is: Yes, he can probably be charged with something, but what could get adjudicated of? That's a tough question without knowing more. A firecracker could be a destructive device, see ORS 166.382, but there's a 2004 case which discusses a modification of a pyrotechnic device and whether or not that qualifies as a destructive device. See, State ex rel. Juv. Dep't. v. Garrett, 193 Or.App. 629, 91 P.3d 830 (2004). But there's some bigger picture type of questions too. How did the school find the firecracker? What is the school going to do about it? Is your son getting suspended or other discipline on his permanent record? You should probably consult with a criminal attorney, and one in your area. I'm posting a link of an attorney I know in Bend. Contact him or somebody else.
