Speeding ticket without getting pulled over - MA cop with a radar seemed to have clocked my speed as was trying to slow down?

I was driving through Watertown, MA today and the speed limit keep changing from 30 to 35 to 30 again. As soon as the limit changed from 35 to 30, I was in the process of slowing down and realized that there was a cop standing on the side of the road with a radar. I feel that he might have clocked my speed and then he went to his car to do something. I got little paranoid and thought that the lights would come on and he would start pursuing me to stop. Didn't happen but I'm still apprehensive that I might get a ticket in the mail. Can that happen? If yes, would it be a criminal or a civil violation? How would I go about contesting it as it was not my fault for not suddenly braking to adhere to the speed limit as I would have caused a collision with the car right behind me.

Worry about it if something comes in the mail.

I didn't think you could get random non-fastlane tickets in the mail - but apparently you can. I just learned this from a friend of mine who got one....Anyway, don't worry until you get one. If you moved and didn't change your address you might want to check at the old place.

In most cases, a police officer can't serve a traffic ticket by mail—they have to give it to the violator in-hand. There are exceptions, but I agree with the others that you shouldn't worry unless you get something in the mail. Speeding is generally a civil infraction, not criminal.
