What is the easiest and least expensive way to change a car title from my living mothers' name to my name in the state of Ohio?

My mother is having health issues, and planning for the inevitable. At this point she has made her will, excluding some savings, and her car. She is planning on giving me her car when she passes. I have heard of a "TOD", but I'm not sure how to go about it. Would it be easier to just have the car transferred now? The real issue is that it's very difficult to get her in and out of the house, meaning it would be next to impossible to get her into a BMV.

The best plan would be to take your mother and the title to the auto to the local Bureau of Motor Vehicles office and transfer the title to your name if that is your mother's wish.

This answer assumes that someone living in Chardon and driving a BMW will not need to seek Medicaid to help pay for long term care. If this assumption is not correct, ignore this answer. If you have siblings, you want to make sure everyone is on the same page about this, because such things can start never-ending wars in families. If the car is valuable, perhaps she will wish to reduce your share of the inheritance by the amount of the car's value, which would be done in her Will or Trust. If she is no longer driving and doesn't need the car, then she also doesn't need the expense of maintaining it and paying for insurance. It is always procedurally easier if the owner will go to a title office and execute the paperwork there. If she is not able to do that, she can sign over her car to you using the space provided on the back of the title (assuming the car is paid for).

A TOD can be done easily. There are also other solutions if you don't find that is a suitable alternative.
