I'm 17 years old and both my parents are drug addicts. They've gotten in trouble a ton of times and has gotten away with it. I've been living out on my own for about 3 months now. I have a job and a place to live. Can I legally move out of state without police tracking me down?

Hello, I am sorry to learn of your predicament. It is unfortunate, however, there is help available. You are technically a minor until you turn 18. Therefore, you cannot really live on your own. You need to remain in school and complete a high school education. If you were to move, there may not be anyone with legal authority to enroll you in a public high school or serve as your guardian and you may not be able to get your diploma, which is critical to your future success. The State of Vermont has help available for you, which includes shelter, food, medical care and education. At your age, you should not be worried about survival, but rather about growing and expanding your horizons. You do not need the added burden of determining if you will eat or where you will sleep. Please call the VT Department of Families at 1-800-649-5285 and describe your situation to them. They WILL HELP you. Legal Disclaimer: If this information has been helpful, please indicate below.
