The unit is in Hemet Ca.I am currently in HoustonTX. Im 43 days past due. 5X10 sized unit. $75 a month. Payment was due August 26. I have to pay August and September. Unit #548 close Base Rent: $144.00 Insurance Premium: $18.00 Fees: $100.00 Total: $262.00 They add a $15 late fee plus an $85 "lien" fee. 3 weeks prior I informed them to let them know I would pay balance on Oct 1st when I receive money. However they failed to mention that $85 fee would be assessed to my account if I pay it on October 1. They failed to email me notifications or mail me notifications about the lien. They said "by California law we have to charge you this lien fee after 36 days" I call them today to make a payment. This is how I heard about the added fees. Please help. Should I just pay these fees?

Check the leasing agreement to see if it says anything. By law, you are supposed to be informed of any fees that you will be assessed for late payments etc. They are not required to remind you of that. You can also ask what part of the code requires that payment and see what it actually says. Most likely you will have to pay unless you work out a deal with them. Also, just FYI in NY there is a state required $85 penalty for any traffic violation, so even if the fine is $20 it becomes $105, these things do exist.
