If my parents gave me and my boyfriend verbal permission, that I could move in with him, would that be enough to get emancipated

In September my mom and dad gave me permission to move in with my boyfriend. They even told my boyfriend that I could move in. Now, they are making me stay with them. Can they keep me here if they already gave me permission to move out months ago?

In short, the answer is no. If you are 16 years old, or older, and have lived in North Carolina for the last 6 months, you can file a petition in your county requesting emancipation. In that petition, among other things, you must explain to the court why you want to be emancipated and how you plan to meet your needs and expenses for living, such as a job, etc. Your parents would be the respondents in the matter, and you would have the responsibility of showing to the court that emancipation is in your best interests. Once a decree of emancipation is entered, you are treated as an adult and the decree is irrevocable, and your parents are relieved of all legal obligations owed to you. Based on the information you provided above, it does not sound like emancipation is the best course of action for you at this time. Your parents may have a reason for changing their mind on allowing you to move in with your boyfriend. I would recommend talking with them first before taking any legal actions. If you are seeking emancipation, I would suggest speaking with an attorney in your area. You can find one here on . Best of luck.

Sorry, but no. Emancipation is ordered by a court after you petition for emancipation and showing you are working and able to support yourself.
