How do I go about getting my license reinstated and finishing all my courses and paying my fines on a charge over 4 years old?

I pled guilty to a misdemeanor DUI in Indiana about 4 years ago. I was placed on unsupervised probation and was told I would be off once I finished a few classes and paid some fees. Some family things came up and shortly after I moved out of state. I was young, dumb and irresponsible and I never finished paying my fines or classes and did not inform the state I was relocating. I would like to go about correcting all of this now so I can get my license back and put all of this behind me, but I have no idea where to start? Should I get a lawyer in Arkansas and have them contact Indiana or should I call a lawyer in Indiana and have them sort it out? What consequences are likely for having ignored completing my probation?

My recommendation is that you grab a legal pad, sit down, and call the Department of Motor Vehicles that issued your original license you seek to restore driving privileges on. Be polite on the phone, gracious, and patient because you may be asking them quite a few questions. When it comes to the DMV and phone calls, its all about being respectful and they are quite helpful. You will want to inquire into what stops or holds their on on your license preventing a restoration of your driving privileges. For each of these stops or holds, you want to ask what remedial action needs to be taken. If it is a failure to comply with fines or a sentence on a case, get the case number if possible and the county. Then follow up with the clerk of that county to comply with the requirements to pay/do community service, etc. From there, speak to the clerk about obtaining proof for the DMV of compliance with those terms and deliver that to them. If its a failure to meet some administrative requirement, inquire into what you must do to meet that requirement. Take whatever steps are needed and provide proof to the DMV. There may be a central office that you must send this proof to (in our state, there are only two locations that take this stuff). Send it to the right location and wait for the requisite processing time. After you have determined the causes of your suspension/revocation, the steps needed for solving them, and the places you need to go, use that to inform your decision about whether you will hire an attorney. As a general rule, I'd recommend hiring one if you have to appear in court (this is referred to as "motioning up a case" or "appearing on a case"). If no court appearance is required, you can handle the license paperwork yourself. Either way, consultations are usually free so if work/family makes doing the legwork difficult, consider calling an attorney and inquiring into how much they will charge. As for which state, you will want an attorney of the state where the stop or hold originates out of. If your DUI case is in Arkansas, then you need an Arkansas attorney. If you have a failure to appear in Indiana, you need an Indiana attorney. The phone call to the Department of Motor Vehicles should clear up where you need to do what and will inform your decision of where to hire an attorney. Best of luck and I hope that helps!

You should get the fines paid and contact the agency about the possibility of completing the education requirements where you are.

You need to have an attorney in AK review your circumstances and advise you. But have you even tried to find out what has to be done from the AK dmv? You can start with that.
