While driving at night I happened to hit one of those plastic pipes that one sees where there is road construction. Reportable?

I was following the vehicle in front of me, I noticed one of those plastic stand up pipes but did not have enough time to avoid hitting it. Is this type of incident required to be reported? The pipe I am referring to is one of those orange plastic stand up pipes which one sees on road construction projects. I do not believe there would have been any damage. What could the ramification be if it is reported?

With respect, I am not sure why you are worried about this incident. You hit a plastic pipe, no damage was done, apparently to your vehicle, you or the pipe. While there may be a place to report such an incident, what would be the purpose of reporting it? You have filed this question under personal injury. If there is no "injury" either to your property or to you, then there is no claim. If you think the pipe has been placed unsafely and is a hazard you can report it to the California Department of Transportation. You can get the number for this department on the California state website.

It is unclear whether you are concerned about making a claim for damages or you are concerned about getting in trouble for damaging the plastic pipe. If you were not injured and there was no damage to your vehicle than there is no point in making a claim for damages. If you are concerned about getting in trouble for damaging the plastic pipe you should contact a criminal defense attorney for an opinion.

According to your auto policy, all incidents are to be reported. Where no one is hurt, no real damaged occurred, and you do not intend to make a claim, then it does not appear any legal reporting is required. This only comes into play when failure to timely report triggers a declination of coverage upon a claim you make upon your own policy later.
