IRS lost my payment and is threatening to seize my assets.

I owed the IRS money for my 2006 return because it was prepared incorrectly. I went to an accounant to have it fixed and sent an amended return in with a check for the amount owed. The check was cashed by the IRS, but they still show the amended balance in their system. No one knows where the money went but I have a copy of the check from my bank proving that they cashed it. The IRS refuses to acknowledge this and still wants me pay the amended balance. ($444.00) What do I do?

The contact information is at http://www.irs.gov/advocate/article/0,,id=97402,00.html . You can also contact the offices of your Congressional Senators ( www.senate.gov ) or Representative ( www.house.gov ). Usually, if you provide a photocopy of both the front and the back of the cashed check, the IRS should be able to find out where the money was credited to. Did you write on the check your SSN and that the check was payment for 2006? If not, the money may have been credited to the wrong year.
