I was cited for going 54 MPH in a 45 MPH zone in Winston Salem. The officer stated I was actually going 15 MPH over but only cited me for 9 over.
If I simply pay the ticket will I get any points on my license? Most law offices I've contacted want an excess of $100 to go to court on my behalf in hopes of reducing it to an improper equipment. However, I don't know if it's worth the additional cost, along with the original citation cost if I can simply pay the fine and not get any points.
Thanks for the help
Pleading responsible to a charge of driving 9 miles over the speed limit will result in points being placed on a Defendant's drivers license. Depending on your driving record, it could also result in an increase to your automobile insurance rates. You will have to weigh the costs of hiring an attorney in order to try and get an improper equipment against your insurance rates going up for three years. In some cases, the fee you pay to an attorney will be much less than paying for a rate spike.
Agree with Mr Siegle but want to start with this: none of us know what's on your driving history. With that said, we don't know if the 3 license penalty points you're gonna receive by merely pleading guilty by paying off the ticket will get you in trouble with NCDMV.
We also don't know whether you've had any other speeding tickets in the past 12 months.
We also don't know what your insurance policy looks like so we don't know whether you've had any chargeable incidents in the last 3 years -wrecks included.
This is why we lawyers who regularly represent clients in traffic courts across NC charge fees- we get paid to know this info, in order to strategize an appropriate defense or plea bargain as well as go to court for our clients.

If you just pay it off, you will get license points and insurance points. You should pay the $100. It will be cheaper than paying the insurance increase.
