I sublet a room and I gave one month deposit to my roommate. However, I paid directly to my roommate only utilities and I paid
rent directly to the building. The sublease agreement was for 6 months but had to leave at the fifth month because my Visa and work permit expired at the 5th month and that was made very clear since the beginning but my roommate was too lazy to find another roommate. I have been doing some research and it looks like by paying rent directly to the building and not to my roommate I established tenancy.
Does that mean my landlord technically became the actual building and not my roommate anymore?
If so, may I claim *invalidity of the sublease agreement# and ask my roommate for my deposit back that was kept for the 6th month rent since we agreed I was only going to stay 5 months and didn't make any effort to find another roommate?
