A friend has her N-400 pending and just realized her green card expired. She filed her I-90 yesterday to renew it, but doesn't think she will get it in time to travel. Is there anything she can do that will allow her to re-enter. Canceling her trip will be a huge ordeal as she was traveling with her 5 kids and husband.

If you filed the FORM I-90 online, you can take the receipt to the local USCIS office and obtain the I-551 stamp in your valid passport to allow you to verify that you are proceeding forward in obtaining another resident card.

It's a shame that she didn't notice this when she sent in her N-400. I agree with my colleague ... make an info pass appointment and take the I-90 and N-400 receipts along with an unexpired passport. NOTE, sometimes the ASC will give a 1 year sticker when going in for biometrics.

Hopefully your friend will have already attended her "biometrics" appointment prior to traveling abroad. She does need to cancel any travel plans. All she needs to do is schedule an INFOPASS appointment at her local CIS district office, show the receipt of her pending I-90 application, flight ticket reservation with a date certain departure, as well as bring along her valid national passport and request that an "i-551 (temporary green card) stamp be affixed on her passport. It will hopefully be valid for one year and be for multiple, unlimited amount of entries.
