What is the penally for not advertising in a newspaper publication a new DBA in Los Angeles county California

I had no idea when I filed a DBA I had to advertise my home address in a newspaper, this is a big BIG problem. My new business is home based, but I do not make any sales directly out of here nor have customers here. My business name is the same as my DJ name, and being an attractive female with a couple of stalkers, if I publish my business name and home address I'm gonna have worse problems. I cannot reach anyone at the registrar to ask this question, and the newspapers all said they will publish the address on my DBA. I can't use a PO Box. What penalty will I be under if I do not publish? Is there any recourse I can take? I cannot have stalkers knowing my home address. I don't know what to do and am really worried I'm going to either have a big fee, or have to forfeit my business :(

Look into renting a virtual office - there are many locations to choose from in the greater southern California region. With many, you get a physical address that you may use as your company's physical address, as well as used for a mailing address - so this is a step above a PO box. You usually get phone, fax, internet, conference room use, and such typical business services as well - different pricing plans, but typically a monthly cost to you. As for a penalty if you do not publish ... not sure, I do not think so. If you do publish your dba (fictitious business name) filing simply is not completed. You may need the dba to receive checks in your business checking under your DJ name.

In order for you to formalize your DBA, you are required to run the notice in a paper of local circulation in your county within a specific period of time after you file your Statement of Fictitious Business Name. You can often find small newspapers that will do this for a nominal fee and do not broadcast your name as a major paper would. A Proof of Publication of the notice must be sent to the Recorder's office within a certain period of time after your DBA filing certifying that you have run the notice properly. Failure to return the Proof of Publication will likely mean that your DBA will not be formalized and may be removed from county records as though it did not exist. If you are unable to communicate with the Recorder's office, I would recommend contacting a business attorney to assist you.
