Husband and I are separated & plan to divorce - he's asked for my help sponsoring his daughters. What would that commit me to?

Husband of 7 years cleaned me out, cheated, and dumped me. Divorce is in our future but he's asked me to help him sponsor his 2 daughters. He says he can't do it on his own because the last time he went to the UK he stayed over the allowed time so his waiting period to be able to sponsor them had to start over (3 years). Since they are closing in on 17 and 18 he's asked if I will postpone the divorce and help him to sponsor them in name only -- he'd pay fees. Frankly I don't want to do it but I'm trying not to be petty and just think of my step daughters, at the same time I doubt we'll maintain any type of relationship in the future. I don't want to say no just because he's been cruel to me, and at the same I'm sick of being a chump. What the repercussions/obligations if I do this?

This is not a Family Law question. I will move it to the correct section.

It doesn't sound like a good idea to me since as a sponsor you will also be required to file I-864 affidavits of support for the step-daughters, which can have certain potential consequences down the road.

The fact that you posted something like "in name only" in your post, it indicates to me that you are aware you are about to commit fraud if you go on with this. The US government doesn't take fraud lightly. You will also need to file the financial sponsorship affidavit, like my colleague said in his answer. This can expose you to financial liability if they become public charge. You should talk to a lawyer and think very well before you take any steps.
