You can search for attorneys by clicking on the Find a Lawyer link at the top of the page. Make sure you get a real attorney, not just an advocate. They are not the same. Technically, anyone can be an advocate. It's just a fancy word often used by someone who is not a lawyer. You don't want just anybody. You want an experienced and licensed attorney who will represent you at all stages of your claim including at your hearing.

In addition to Mr. Pham's suggestion, you can contact NOSSCR (www.nosscr.org) for assistance finding someone in your area. You can also look to your state and county bar associations.

Look on . Also, the word "aggressive" may be misplaced. You want an experienced attorney who will be available to talk to you and who will go the extra mile to make sure your case is as strong as possible.

Social Security is a specialized area of the law that requires an attorney who is familiar with the rules and regulations that govern whether or not you meet the requirements for obtaining a finding of disability and who can help you provide responses that accurately reflect your disability and result in a favorable decision. As stated by another attorney, knowledge and experience are most important. Of course, you want someone who will strongly advocate for you, but experience in the field is very important. During the past twenty-five years doing Social Security cases I have worked with several good Social Security attorneys in the Minneapolis area, but I would caution you that there are some Social Security law firms that advertise a lot and have large volume practices, who spend little time on each client's case. The sources listed by other attorneys for retaining an attorney are good sources, or you may try to do an internet search for Social Security Disability attorney. Interview the attorney and ask questions of them that you believe to be important. If they cannot or will not answer your questions, that should be a good indication that the attorney may not be a good fit for you.
