How can I file for dissolution of marriage when we live in different states?

I have been separated from my husband for 7 years. We have no joint property or assets, and our only child together is 18 and lives with me. He resides in Texas. I would like information on how to file for dissolution of marriage please.

Unless your husband will travel to Ohio for a dissolution hearing, you may want to consider filing an uncontested divorce. I would recommend consulting with a local attorney in your area. They would be in the best position to tell you what the domestic relations judge in your jurisdiction will and will not allow. If you don't have one in mind already, has a very good "find a lawyer" link on the site. Good luck.

You can file for divorce in your home state and use publication notice to get around the distance issue. You do that if you cannot find the other party or that party does not want to come to your area. But if both of you decide to have an uncontested divorce, it greatly simplifies the process. But as in all divorce matters, it is best to invest some money in a local divorce lawyer that can guide you in the process. Good luck.

Don't worry that your husband is in Texas. If you have been an Ohio resident for at least 6 months, you can file in Ohio (Summit County). You would just have to have a written separation agreement with your husband that you both sign (in addition to some other standard court forms to make it official) which disposes of all property and debt issues (even if it just says you keep yours, he keeps his, and there is nothing joint). If your son is still in high school, you normally have to somehow address child support but if he is graduating shortly, you could file then and file without addressing any support issues. Hope that helps. Good luck.
