Am I entitled to full time benefits as a part time employee?

I was hired as a part time employee at a very large hospital in Florida. However, for the past several pay periods I have been averaging 40-50 hours per week. My department is short staffed and management states they will not be hiring to fill the missing positions any time soon. Our HR offers 2 levels of benefits, but the benefits are much more costly at the part time employee rate. Am I entitled to benefits at the full time rate? If I continue to work 40 hours or more a week, will I be eligible for an increase in benefits based on law?

At this time, your employer is not required to provide you with full-time benefits. Employers are not required to provide employees with most "benefits" that people expect. You may be entitled to medical insurance if you continue to work 40 hours per week. You should speak with a local attorney regarding this matter.
