Can a doctor's office deny a patient their medications?

I was recently laid-off from my job and currently have no health insurance to cover my wife and I. Both my wife and I are on medications for High Blood Pressure, Diabetes, and I have to be on heart meds. My wife ran out of her diabetes meds and when she called the doctor’s office, was denied her medication because they told her that they needed to see her. My wife explained to the office staff that I was unemployed, and that we had no health insurance, but obviously it fell on deaf ears. Q: Can a doctor blatantly refuse to renew a patient’s med scripts because the patient does not have the extra cash flow to spend on a visit to the doctor’s office? Yet it’s vital that the money be there to pay for the medications? If we had the extra money, my wife would gladly go for the checkup.

Yes. The doctor can require you to come in before continuing a prescription and is not required to see you without being paid. This is not the fault of the doctor, this is the fault of the Florida legislature for not expanding Medicaid coverage. You can try to obtain healthcare coverage through the Marketplace at www.healthcare.cov, which with subsidies can be extremely inexpensive - if you qualify, and if you don't it will be because of the failure of the legislature to expand Medicaid coverage under the ACA. Also, you can call your local United Way to determine what resources may be available for free or low cost medical care for uninsured Floridians.
