Police Officer Says Case Closed
Anonymous10 views4 answers
When a detective states that a case is closed, does this mean that his investigation is complete and no charges will be filed, or does this mean that his investigation is complete and the case has been referred to the prosecutor's office? I was suspected of a traffic offense and I cooperated with the police when they asked for my proof of insurance. After giving the police my insurance information, they added it to the accident report and said the case is closed. I simply want to know what this means exactly?
It usually means no charges will be filed. However, each department functions different and may uses different terms. You can check the court's website to double check.
It usually means the investigation is over. it does not necessarily have anything to do with whether or not charges will be filed. That may be up to the prosecutor.

The officer likely meant his part is over. If you were given a ticket, you were charged with something. Check the ticket for a court date. If not, the report will be forwarded to the prosecutor, who will decide whether or not to file a charge.
it is up to the prosecutor to decide what charges are filed. If, however, the office does not file a complaint then the prosecutor will have nothing to pursue. If he doesn't swear out a complaint or give you a ticket within so many days it is unlikely you will be charged.
