I was arrested last night and charged with DUI (first offense). I was involved in a car accident. The Reno NV Police came out, viewed the scene, wrote a report. I have no idea what is in the report. I have not reported the accident to my insurance company yet as I don't know quite what to say. I need to report this today. I could use some advise. I submitted to a blood test. I was given a notice that DMV was notified to revoke or suspend my license. I'm not sure what the BAC results were.
There really is no issue here. You report this collision to your auto carrier. You tell them what happened. You hire an attorney to represent you on the DUI--though I will say here in Pennsylvania many people do not secure representation on a first offense DUI since the penalty is pretty standard.
I caution you to be very careful about what you say to the insurance company about this incident. Statements you make to them could end up being admissible in court as admissions against your interest and as part of the "business document" exception to the hearsay rule. Retain an experienced DUI defense attorney in your area to guide you through this and to handle your criminal case.
Don't answer any questions regarding drinking and driving without a lawyer. The insurance company is going to pressure you. You may want to hire a DUI lawyer to help you with this situation.
A lot of insurance policies have drop down provisions for DUI. This means that being charged with a DUI at the time of the accident can reduce your coverage (often to the state minimum) and expose you to more potential personal liability. Hire an attorney.
