It really depends on what your verbal contract contained, but no, generally speaking your landlord in not allowed to just raise your rent. I would advise that you contact an attorney to discuss the specifics of your situation.

If you are a month to month tenant with no written lease the landlord may raise the rent on 30 days notice. If you had a verbal agreement to the contrary you will need to prove it to prevail with such things as eailsvorvtexts that can establish that you had an agreement. If you can't prove the terms of your verbal agreement he will be able to raise the rent on 30 days notice.

Dear Valley Cottage Tenant: A tenant without a written lease lives life precariously; always at the mercy of a landlord to continue the relation month to month. When the landlord decides to extract a higher monthly rent, the tenant may surely decline and the landlord has the right to provide a one month notice terminating the tenancy. A termination notice made in May will act to end the tenancy on June 30, 2015. So your landlord did not provide proper notice to you, and may find out after starting a court case, that you are entitled to stay in your home for a while longer. But at some point, your landlord will hire a lawyer if you and the landlord cannot agree on paying more rent.
