What is my recourse? What can I do?

This was a 2 hour class of about 15-20 patients on management of pre-diabetes . I was never informed of the cost or that insurance may not cover it until I received a bill for $772 about 2 months later. Under the description on the invoice, it states "Self-mgmt educ/training 5-8 pt." I am assuming that the last part refers the number of patients, which is inaccurate. I have disputed the charge with the provider. The patient advocate for the provider stated during a phone conversation that at the time, the person responsible for scheduling was new and may not have informed everyone. Furthermore, she stated that there was one other patient with the same complaint. I don't agree with this charge; however, I don't want this to go to collections and affect my credit. Please advice.

Put all of the informaiton (including what the patient advocate said) in writing and send it to the billing department, explaining that, under the circumstances, you believe you have no obligation to make any payment (much less $772 for a two-hour group class). Then see how the billing department responds.
