My ex girlfriend totaled a car that I gave her in a DUI accident. Am I liable for damages?

I had the car insured up till the 1st of June, which is when I gave it to her, in exchange of my dog back.

If you are listed as the registered owner, you can potentially be liable (your insurance) up to $15,000. If the insurance has lapsed, you could be responsible for $15,000 as the registered owner. Regards, Jeffrey Hughes

Possibly, especially if its still in your name however, your ex will be held liable first. Did she have insurance?

You have a claim over against her. If she destroyed your property, if there's a crime victims fund or restitution you can ask that reimbursing you for the claims will be part of her sentence/agreement. Did you sign it over to her? If you did, then it's worth having a lawyer argue the registration. Did you turn in your plates? In the future--a dog isn't worth a car and 15 k.

Yes up to 15k for injury to one person or 30k for everyone injured. This is called owners liability. If she was drinking when you gave her the car to use.. You may have unlimited liability.

Generally, California law limits owner liability to 15K per person, $30K per accident, however there can be exceptions. You should talk to a personal injury attorney about the details of your case.

Did you sign the car over to her and mail in the proof that you had done so to DMV? In other words, were you technically no longer the owner of the vehicle at the time? If not the owner you would have no liability. If you were technically still the owner then yes, you have liability and hopefully had car insurance to cover that liability.

If you're the registered owner you're on the hook for up to 15,000.00 Driver is responsible as well but it can be an unlimited amount depending on the damages and possible injuries to any third parties, etc.

There are two theories of liability against you : 1) owner liability under Vehicle Code §17150, which is capped at $15,000 per person/$30,000 per accident injury limits and $5,000 for property damages. 2) the second theory is negligent entrustment. If you had reason to know that she was going to drive drunk on the night of the accident, or if you knew she had a history of drunk driving/unsafe driving, you could be liable for all of the damage she caused under the theory that you were negligent for allowing a dangerous driver to use your car.
