Is it safe to travel while my H1B extension is pending? Planning to go outside of country for 3-4 weeks. Current I-797 approval is valid till September 2015, but old visa on passport expired in April 2015. Does traveling outside US cause any problem to my H1B extension application which is pending and will there be any issues at port of entry on arrival?

You should not travel outside of USA while some petition is pending even if you have I-797 approval.

You will need to acquire a new visa in your passport to return to the USA.
