In North Carolina under the most generous reading of the law the statute may have expired when he turned 19. Confirm with local counsel.

first of all I am sorry to hear of this situation. Teh shoirt answer to your question is that in some insatances the statute f limitations can be as long as 3 years from date of 18th birthday of the injured party. A specific answer to your situation can only be provided once a complete understanding is gained regarding the injures suffered at birth and how those have manifest and impacted the life of your gransdson. I encourage you to consult with an experienced attorney who can properly advise you and wish you the best of luck in this matter.

Agree with other answers and note that - there may be glaring statute of limitations issue (with some exceptions and tolling issues) that are best explained directly by local NC counsel of your choosing. SOL should be dealt with now and is barrier to moving forward until resolved. Best to consult a local attorney in your jurisdiction with the specifics of matter. Click on "Find A Lawyer" tab above and you will be able to figure out how to best move forward.

There are time limits that apply to your grandson's claims for medical malpractice. The specific time limit is dependent on various factors. I would need all of the facts before I could give you an opinion as to the statute of limitations applicable to this claim.
