Do I have to pay civil demand letter? I was caught shoplifting.

I was caught shoplifting, the total was around $37. Policeman came, gave me a citation and let me go. So I went to the court and paid my fee. After a while I've got a letter saying its a settlement offer for $340. I didn't have an opportunity to pay that and than again I got the letter saying its a settlement offer but for $600. And I also didn't pay that. The thing is that I'm not an American citizen and I left the country 2 weeks after receiving the 2nd letter.

Most of us advise our clients not to pay civil demand letters. The company could sue you, but they most likely won't. It would cost more than they would get and many, many people are intimidated and pay the demands.

civil demands are unenforceable and you do not have to pay it.

They do have the right to charge you for their time. Most of my clients just ignore the demand. I have never seen them come after someone for not paying. Make sure to handle your theft case. If it is your first offense, a good lawyer should be able to get it dismissed for you. Do not take a conviction because it will hurt your job prospects.

don't pay it and don[t worry about it. They can't do anything. I hope you did a deferred probation on the theft charge and not a conviction.
