How much does getting a divorce cost?

Business 6 views 6 answers
I want a divorce, but my husband may not be as agreeable to learn this. I have 3 children ages 13-17, and I want to make this as smooth as possible. He doesn't have the finances to support the children and me, let alone pay for a lawyer, so that is a concern. Money & lack of communication is the root of our issues, which makes this process a difficult one to generate.

You mention your husband but what about you. Are you working? Can you hire a lawyer? If not you can contact legal aid and see if you qualify for free kegalvservicrs from them. If not you will have to use a credit card to hire counsel or borrow funds.

The answer is the same as what a haircut costs. By that I mean that legal services are essentially the same as any other services in that the cost depends on a number of factors including whether the divorce is contested or uncontested, whether there are child related issues, spousal support issues, complex asset issues, reL estate, business ownership and last, but not least, the skill and standing of the attorney and the results accomplished and the number of hours and the rates charged in the community. While it may be possible to secure a relatively inexpensive dissolution, you may be penny wise and dollar foolish especially if it leaves unresolved future issues. Suppose you have s high school age child and there are no provisions as to college and you have to return to court.

getting a divorce need not be expensive if the parties are able to quickly come to an agreement of what is to be the end result. if they cannot, the cost could be substantial. there is no way to answer your question on cost without a great deal more information that you should not post here.

I agree with the others - there is really no way to predict what YOUR case will cost - since the cost will depend on many factors. However, it is important that this situation be done correctly - not necessary in the cheapest way possible. The results of your divorce case will impact you and your children for years to com.

It is impossible to estimate specifically what a divorce will cost. If it can be done amicably then it will be much cheaper and much quicker. Find an attorney that is reasonable with billing and that will do a good job for you by searching through avvo. Many offer free consults.

I agree with the above. There are a number of factors which go into how much a divorce will cost. Therefore, it is too hard to predict without getting a lot more information from you. If money is a concern, which I'm sure it is, then you could look for an attorney who offers reduced rates based on your level of income.
